WWII Merchant Mariner sailors to get long-deserved recognition as combat veterans
The attendees of the event visited the S.S. John W. Brown docked in the Port of Baltimore. The S.S. John Brown is one of only two remaining operational Liberty Ships that participated in World War II. The tour brought back memories for 94-year-old Edward Pascal.
Honors for Hugh Mulzac, the captain who fought Jim Crow, Hitler, and McCarthy
The AMMV’s Congressional Gold Medal Dinner was a wonderful tribute to Mulzac and all Merchant Marines who fought against fascism abroad and Jim Crow and McCarthyism domestically.
Pioneering Black Ship Captain Honored Alongside Merchant Marine Veterans Of WWII
The featured honoree at this year’s AMMV event was civil rights leader and US Merchant Marine World War II hero Captain Hugh Mulzac, master of the SS Booker T Washington.

I was attending the gala dinner of the US Merchant Marine Veterans Association and was speaking about the need to recognize merchant mariners of Korea, Vietnam, and both Gulf Wars as veterans. One industry big whig smirked and said “The Navy will never let the Gulf War mariners get veteran status. John is a dreamer.”
HGTC professor accepts rare medal on behalf of WWII veteran father
A Horry Georgetown Technical College professor was finally able to see his veteran father get the appreciation he felt was always deserved.
Interview with Burley Smith from SS MERIDITH VICTORY Ship of Miracles
The SS Meredith Victory was a United States Merchant Marine Victory ship, a type of cargo freighter built for World War II. Under the leadership of Captain Leonard LaRue, Meredith Victory is credited with the largest humanitarian rescue operation by a single ship, evacuating more than 14,000 refugees in a single trip during the Korean War. Burley Smith is one of three survivors remaining of this ship. He is a graduate of the Kings Point Merchant Marine Academy.
What the SHIP is Going On?
Nearly two dozen of the surviving veterans of America’s WWII maritime campaign are in Baltimore this week for the American Merchant Marine Veterans (AMMV) National Convention. As part of the program, the vets were feted yesterday with a visit to the John W. Brown – one of only two Liberty ships which are still operational.
