veterans speak flyer

On November 27th at 7 pm E.T., AMMV will be participating in the VETERANS SPEAK! virtual event hosted by Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba, MI.

WWII mariner & famed international speaker Dave Yoho will provide the keynote address. Other guest speakers from the Merchant Marine include WWII MM veteran Capt. Hugh Stephens, Korean War mariner — last living crewmember of the S/S Meredith Victory during the Hungnam evacuation — Burley Smith, and Capt. Sherri Hickman of Houston Pilots. Other participants will include veterans from the Michigan American Legion.

This 2-hour event will be hosted by the students of the Civics Corps, a student club under the advisement of Dr. June Klees, a professor at Bay de Noc College since 1997. Dr. Klees recently joined AMMV and has attended a few maritime events, and she will be part of the AMMV group in Washington, DC this Veterans Day. Although new to the “maritime” circle, Dr. Klees is a veterans’ advocate and is known in many local, regional, and national civics movements. This is sure to be a quality presentation!

This event is free and can be accessed by simply clicking on the Zoom link. You will not be expected to participate; just log on and enjoy the presentation! While this virtual gathering has the ability to educate and effect dozens of participants and viewers, the idea of seeing similar events pop up around the country could become a tool to ultimately educate thousands of people about the WWII Merchant Marine. Please consider listening in!
